In Tidewater, one could say there are many small businesses that are family oriented or were started by families that have carried on generation after generation. The same can be said about the Skinner Family who opened their doors for business in 1979. Ray Skinner, Sr. enjoyed woodworking as a hobby so after retiring from a career in the Navy and the U.S.P.S., he began working out of his home with his wife, Kay, and his children. After a year he decided to lease a building and entered the world of art as a custom picture framer. Their first store thrived over 8 years and they relocated to a larger building on Independence Blvd. and grew over the next 20 years. After most of the family retired, his youngest son, Paul, along with his wife, Norma, expanded the business, and made the move to their current location on Shore Drive in the Chic's Beach area in 2006. After 34 years, their customer base has grown and continues to thrive with advertising by word of mouth alone. They added a larger art gallery where they display a large selection of original artwork and photography by several local artists as well as prints, posters and maps. They offer excellent and personalized customer service with an extensive selection of custom frames, mats and select decor items. They are knowledgeable in all aspects of framing and specialize in shadow boxes and 3D items. All work is handled professionally and on site. Their prices are extremely reasonable compared to other retail stores and always run seasonable sales on gallery art. Skinner's Frames & Art Gallery has an easy layaway program and offer discounts to students, artists, decorators and active military. They also offer gift certificates which never expire. General hours are Tuesday through Saturday, and can arrange for special appointments. Come visit our large art gallery and let us you with your personal framing selections!
